Waste to Energy Facility Photo Tour

The Waste-to-Energy Facility is the primary solid waste disposal facility for Grand Rapids, E. Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker & Wyoming. Trucks dump trash on the floor. Trash is pushed into a refuse holding pit by a front end loader.. After trash is pushed into the pit a crane grabs loads of trash. The crane loads trash into one of two feed chutes that lead to combustion chambers. A Continuous Emissions Monitoring System insures proper operation within permit standards. Ferrous metals are separated from the ash and are recycled. Ash, the byproduct of burning the trash, is non-hazardous and takes up only about 5% of the space in a landfill of regular waste. Ash is trucked from the Waste to Energy Facility to South Kent Landfill daily.
