Safe Food Handling Practices

Illness can result from the consumption of food that is not properly handled.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 48 million people annually suffer from illness due to food.  Of those, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die.  Illness from food also has an economical cost.  The Economic Research Service and United States Depart of Agriculture estimates the cost of foodborne illness to be 6.9 billion dollars annually.  This cost is due to medical expenses, lost productivity, and death.

Avoiding illness from food can be simple if you follow a few rules.  Four practices that will help you make safe food within your home are CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK & CHILL.
