Freedom of Information Act Requests (FOIA)

The Records Division processes all Freedom of Information requests for the Sheriff's Department. If you wish to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act for a report we have on file, you must submit a written letter. The letter must explain in detail about the report you are requesting, including the date or incident number, and the name(s) of the person (s) involved. If you did not initiate the report then you must describe your connection with the report, and the purpose of the request. This is needed to determine what might be excluded under the Freedom of Information Act to protect the privacy of the individuals involved. You can also obtain a blank freedom of information request form online. Special rates apply for FOIA requests depending on time spent researching the case. Make sure to put contact information in the request in case some clarification is needed. FOIA requests are dated upon receiving them at our office. Normally they are handled within five working days. The FOIA Deputy can request a ten day extension and will notify the person requesting the report if more time is needed to fulfill the request.

Request for Reports

This category includes any request for a police report. The vast majority of these requests are for accident reports. However, this category also includes Freedom of Information Requests for several different documents. This fulfillment can take anywhere from five minutes to several hours. The average is fifteen minutes. These are handled at all four of our office locations and may be received in person or in the mail.
